Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a scholarship program funded by the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India, to attract exceptionally highly motivated students for pursuing basic science courses (like B.Sc Physics, B.Sc Chemistry, M.Sc Physics, M.Sc Chemistry, etc.) and research career (after doing Ph.D [Doctorate of Philosophy], PDF [Post-doctoral Fellowship]) in science. The intent of the program is to find out students with aptitude for research and motivate them to take up careers in scientific research, and prepare them for the various R&D [Research and Development] projects of the country. The advertisement for the KVPY Fellowship appears in all the national newspapers on the Technology Day (May 11) and the Second Sunday of July every year. Selection of the students is made from those studying in grade 11 to 1st year of any undergraduate Program in Basic Sciences namely B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology having aptitude for scientific research. Online written test is conducted. Based on the performance in the aptitude test, short-listed students are called for an interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure. For receiving a fellowship, both aptitude test and interview marks are considered.
Benefits of KVPY
Generous fellowship and contingency grant are provided to the selected KVPY fellows up to the pre Ph.D. level or 5 years whichever is earlier. In addition, summer camps for the KVPY fellows are organized in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country. The IISc (Indian Institute of Science), Bangalore is responsible for the conduct of KVPY.

KVPY fellows who opt out of the basic science (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.) stream at any stage will forfeit the fellowship and contingency grant forthwith.
The fellowship for the students selected under the stream SA/SX/SB will be started after the XII Standard/ (+2) / I year UG, only if they pursue an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences, that are, B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Materials Science, Environmental Science or Geophysics.
Summer program
Participation and satisfactory performance in the summer programme/project each year from the second year (B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat /Integrated M.Sc./Integrated M.S.) onwards in an academic Institution of national or international repute is mandatory for renewal of the fellowship. The report on the summer programme /project together with the assessment report from the mentor will have to be forwarded along with the course performance certificate etc. for renewal purpose from second year of B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat /Integrated M.Sc./Integrated M.S. program.
Other benefits
Each KVPY fellow will be issued an Identity Card so as to have access to national laboratories/ universities who have agreed to extend special privileges like library, laboratory facilities, etc. to KVPY fellows on production of the ID card.
How to prepare for KVPY/ What is the syllabus for the aptitude test ?
There is no prescribed syllabus for the aptitude test. The aptitude test aims to test the understanding and analytical ability of the student than her factual knowledge. However, students are tested for the syllabus up to class X/XII/1st year of B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. as applicable. Questions will be from the following four subjects – Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics and NCERT books maybe used for preparing and for gathering knowledge to clear KVPY aptitude test.
Who is eligible ?
For SA Stream:
Qualifying Exam: Candidates should have passed their 10th class from a recognized board.
Subjects: Applying candidate must have passed 10th level with mandatory subjects of Science & Mathematics.
Required Percentage: Candidates must have scored minimum of 75% marks (65% for reserved category candidates).
Appearing Candidate: Such candidates are also eligible to apply.
For SX Stream:
Qualifying Exam: Applying candidates must have passed 12th class or equivalent examination.
Subjects: Candidates should have passed 12th level with Science subjects (PCB / PCM).
Required Percentage: Candidates must have scored minimum 75% marks in class 12th (65% for reserved category candidates).
Appearing Candidate: Those who are appearing or waiting for their 12th level result can also apply.
For SB Stream:
Qualifying Exam: Candidates those who are in the first year of their UG degree are eligible to apply.
Subjects: Candidates having UG degree in Basic Sciences should have science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology leading to B.Sc. /B.S. /B.Stat/B.Math. /Int. MS. /Int. M.Sc.
Required Percentage: One should have scored 60% marks (50% for reserved category candidates) in Mathematics & Science in 12th.

KVPY 2021 Cut Off
The official authority will release KVPY Cut-Off marks for all streams and categories. It will be necessary for the candidates to score equal to or more than the cut off marks to qualify the entrance test. The cut-off will be released through online mode. The candidates who secure the cut off marks will only be called for attending the counselling process. The qualifying cut-off (out of 100) is given below:

a) How to study for KVPY ?
The primary task of preparing for KVPY is to have an idea about the exam pattern.
